Engagement with the MMC

The current Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, is a founding member of the MMC Leadership Board since 2018 and is the co-chair of the C40-MMC Global Mayors Task Force on Climate and Migration since 2021. The City of Freetown signed the Marrakech Mayors Declaration, pledged to the Call to Local Action for Migrants and Refugees in 2022, and was a Grantee of the ​​​Global Cities Fund for Migrants and Refugees​ in 2021-2022. Freetown also represented the MMC in several diplomatic events, including the 2020-2021 Global Forum for Migration and Development​,​​​ 2022 International Migration Review Forum, ​and COP28, ​and participated in advocacy campaigns on Covid-19 and Afghan refugees.
