Toronto is one of the world’s most diverse cities, with more than half of its residents born outside Canada and a growing migrant and refugee community. The city has launched a variety of programs to welcome newcomers, including its Access Without Fear policy, Toronto Newcomer Strategy, and Toronto Sport Plan, which recognizes sport and recreation as tools for wellbeing and inclusion.
Despite these efforts, migrants and refugees continue to face barriers to accessing services and participating in community life, including high costs, lack of transportation, poor language access, and unfamiliarity with organized sports and community spaces. Play Mobile for Newcomers will address these barriers by bringing free, inclusive sports programming as well as resettlement support services directly to migrant communities across the city.
