Event Overview

The World Urban Forum (WUF) is the premier global conference on sustainable urbanization. Convened by UN-Habitat, a strategic partner of the MMC’s Global Cities Fund for Migrants and Refugees, the Forum is a high level, open and inclusive platform for addressing the challenges of sustainable urbanization. The first WUF was held in Nairobi, Kenya in 2002 and has been held around the world ever since.

WUF has the following objectives:

Raising awareness of sustainable urbanization among stakeholders and constituencies, including the general public;
Improving collective knowledge on sustainable urban development through open and inclusive debate, exchange of best practices and policies, and sharing of lessons learnt.
Promote collaboration and cooperation between different stakeholders and constituencies engaged in the advancement and implementation of sustainable urbanization.

Session Details

Building Inclusive Migration Pathways to Drive Sustainable Urbanization

WHAT: High-level event that will take stock of and discuss emerging practices and innovative policies driven by local governments and urban changemakers to harness the power of migration to drive sustainable urbanization.

This side event is to take stock of emerging practices and innovative policies driven by local governments and urban changemakers that facilitate effective regular migration pathways, accelerating replicable and scalable solutions for migrants’ inclusion and integration in cities leveraging the positive impact of migration for sustainable urbanization.

To do so, the side event will bring the views of a broad range of stakeholders, including UN agencies, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), the Mayors Migration Council (MMC), representatives of Member States, local authorities and cities, urban practitioners, the private sector, and changemakers from civil society. Supporting the Integration of Refugees in Cities

WHAT: In this event, participants will hear from donors, implementers, research organisations, city authorities and refugees themselves about the challenges that urban-based refugees face and additional support they require to access services. The event will explore innovative examples of projects; investments and integrated people-centered approaches to support urban-based refugees, including the impact that this support has had on refugee outcomes. In doing so, this event is integrally linked to several SDGs, including decent work and economic growth (8); reduced inequalities (10); and sustainable cities and communities (11).

The objectives of this event include: understanding the distinct challenges faced by urban-based refugees, and how municipal, national and international actors can support them; understanding how to better account for refugee voices in research and urban profiling; exploring innovative examples of projects and investments that support urban-based refugees, including city-led initiatives, and promote peer to peer learning among city authorities. Urban Planning & City Solutions for Climate Mobility

WHAT: Given the complex and interconnected challenges of climate and migration, this networking event will bring together international actors, academia, different levels of government and community voices to explore together pathways for sustainable solutions that prioritize resilience and equity for all through multi-sectoral collaboration and coordinated actions across scales. The event will also mark the launch of a new Climate Mobility Cities Practice and feature some of its founding partners. Learn more here.
