US Mayors Stand with Minneapolis, Call For Safety and Security for All
NEW YORK, NY— Mayors around the world are standing in solidarity with immigrant communities and the Mayor of Minneapolis as the situation in Minneapolis evolves.
MMC stands united in solidarity with our communities and the values that hold them together: dignity, safety, and trust.
“People are being hurt, families are being ripped apart, long-term Minneapolis residents who have contributed greatly to our city, to our culture, to our economy are being terrorized and now, someone is dead,” said Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis. “This is a moment where all of us in Minneapolis and beyond, we can rise to the occasion. We can show them who we are. We can show them the kind of courage, bravery, love, and compassion that makes Minneapolis, Minneapolis. And that makes America, America.”
Here’s what mayors have said about their responsibility to the safety and security of all residents, and to one another:
- Mayor Mike Johnston of Denver and MMC Leadership Board Member said: “While their intent was to terrorize and intimidate immigrants, they forgot that those immigrants are supported by compassionate, good neighbors, like Renee, who would stand up and support them… It’s time for good people of all parties and backgrounds to stand up and call for this weaponization of ICE in American cities to stop.”
- Mayor Michelle Wu of Boston said: “To protect our residents, we must end the mass deployment of ICE agents into American cities and restore rule of law and basic accountability from the federal government. Boston stands with the people of Minneapolis.”
- Mayor Brandon Johnson of Chicago said: “At the start of their operation in Chicago an ICE agent killed a father under very similar conditions, in his car, right after dropping off his children at school…It is incidents like these that demonstrate why we have pushback on reckless and racist militarized immigration enforcement. Chicago stands in solidarity with Minneapolis. Do not let them change the part of your soul that sees a fellow human being when you look at your neighbor.”
- Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City said: “When ICE agents attack immigrants, they attack every single one of us across this country. This is a city, and will always be a city, that stands up for immigrants. I have made it clear to everyone within my city government—and that extends to NYPD—that we are going to uphold our sanctuary city policies.”
- MMC Governing Board Member and Lord Marvin Rees of Easton said: “The world is witnessing the vital role mayors play in protecting communities against dangerous anti-immigrant actions. This week, amid tragedy, Mayor Frey and supporting U.S. mayors are demonstrating that they lead with compassion and facts, not fear and force. As some global political actors threaten to divide us, mayors are holding us together. We must stand with them as they defend democracy and protect the dignity and human rights of their residents. Their struggle is our struggle.”
